Harnessing The Power of RSS
Definition: Real Simple Syndication (RSS)
What is it? RSS allows you to put fresh content on your website
that updates itself automatically. You can set it to update every hour, twice
a day, once a day, it's up to you. What is does is retrieve news headlines from
websites that publish RSS feeds. You get free content and the publisher
gets a link to their website. It's a win win situation for everyone. It's a well
known fact that websites with fresh content get spidered more often
by search engines like Google and Yahoo.
Most RSS feeds give you approximately the first 250 characters of the article.
To read the entire article visitors must click through to the website who published
the RSS feed.
If you display 10 headlines you get 2500 characters worth of fresh content.
Now to create unique content you can do a couple of things with RSS.
The first is to aggregate multiple RSS feeds. Aggregation simply refers
to combining multiple feeds. You could aggregate 5 feeds, and display
two items from each. The second is to use keyword filtering. This can be used
alone or in combination with aggregation. You specify multiple feeds and specify a keyword.
We'll use "golf" for this example. Now, any feed that contains the word golf
in either the title or description will be aggregated. You end up with
10 unique headlines pertaining to golf that most likely, no other website has.
RSS should be used to enhance the content of your website. If you have a website
about golf, or auto racing, then display golf or auto racing headlines. It will
improve your page's keyword density in an "organic" way when used with aggregation
and/or keyword filtering as described above.
